Susan Hunter Petree’s passions are art and travel, and the paintings she creates are an effort to marry the two. She expresses in an abstract way the feelings, colors, shapes, textures, imagery, and cultures she experiences. Susan starts by making marks, applying paint and then building the painting layer upon layer, adding then taking away, inscribing into the paint or drawing on top of it, sometimes embedding materials she has collected on her travels. She is most happy when in the end, you can see the history of the process, often like an old weathered wall or door.
THE SECOND ACT
LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR!
Susan grew up in a Foreign Service family and spent her childhood moving between Virginia, Japan and Ethiopia. She attended Emma Willard School, the University of Pennsylvania and graduated with an economics and Japanese studies degree from Stanford University. After more than 30 years in the banking and investment advisory business and rising to the executive level, Susan determined that there had to be something more to life. On a spur of the moment trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2011, Susan met an abstract artist and teacher who gave an abstract art workshop. It was as if Susan had finally found her passion… she quit her job, put her NYC apartment on the market, started painting for the first time and has been painting full time ever since. She believes that the colors, textures, line and movement in her work are influenced by the many places she has visited around the world. Newport has been her home for the last 13 years. She is a Trustee and Treasurer of the Newport Art Museum and teaches abstract art at NAM and in her studio in Middletown, RI.
